It starts in preschool with the cute little work bench including a nail, screw, bolt and other items that need the right tool. As three- and four-year-olds we happily strap on our tool belt and go about discovering which tool works for which “problem.” A valuable learning experience for which the implications last a lifetime.
As adults we are often faced with problems that we are not certain how to solve. We grope in the dark for the right tool and sometimes take just what we can find. This approach, at worst, produces failure. At best, the task takes more time, more effort, more energy and produces limited success often with a great deal of frustration.
