Moving your family is a wonderful, exciting and exhausting transition - one that over 8 million children face each year, according to U.S. Census statistics. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the move, both positive and negative emotions swirl among family members.
The Moving Families Initiative seeks to assist families with the difficulties they face when moving. Some of the greatest challenges kids face can include:
- A sense of loss and separation from familiar people, places and things;
- Susceptibility to a wide range of emotions including stress, anger, depression and fear;
- Disruption of routines, schedules, and relationships;
- The “new kid” syndrome; and
- Adults (parents included) who may not understand how moving affects children’s sense of stability and safety.
This blog was launched one year ago to provide a place for parents to go for information and inspiration to help their children adjust and deal with all these challenges, and more. In addition, due to the tremendous amount of change and transition families face when moving, the Moving Families Initiative encourages parents to ask their local participating Real Estate Agent about the Moving Families Initiative. Real Estate Agents are in a unique position to best meet the needs of moving families.
At the heart of the initiative is the Great Moving Adventure DVD, provided free of charge by participating Real Estate Agents. The Great Moving Adventure is an animated feature that chronicles a young boy who is moving with his family. Within the feature are the steps parents can take to work with their real estate agent to create a written game plan to help their children manage the change and transition of moving to a new home.
A few months back, I highlighted a participating MFI Real Estate Agent® named Debbi Hester, who works with moving families in the El Paso, Texas area. (Read that blog post here) The work Debbi does in supporting moving families through change and transition is really the pinnacle of service, and since that original blog post she has raised that service to yet another level. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, Debbi will serve on the parent-teacher association board of her local school district. Talk about putting yourself in the best position to serve those in need!! Way to go, Debbi!!
